Top 5 most depressing christmas songs i have ever heard!

Christmas is one of my favorite times of the year, and its been one of those times where the remains of my family get together in celebration for another year together. But like most families, we have shared a bit of heartache around the holidays, with the passing of family members and the others in the family go astray. Having worked in retail around the holidays, i cant not listen to Christmas music. It is all to frequent and i constantly hear it. Its like when you walk though the mall a week before thanksgiving and you see the Santa displays and the area where you can meet the guy in red for photo opportunities.

So what is it about Christmas music that makes us feel like zombies trying to find the best deals around. I think i have the answer: reassurance. To me, the sound of Christmas music has mind numbing qualities where it blocks out everything and you get that feeling of just leaving the dentist when you get that stuff and half your mouth is numb for about three hours after. Its this music that makes you tolerate the crowds and keep going for more.

Or so you like it to think.

I can not believe some of the songs i have heard, when i think of this time of the year i want to be reminded of all the good things in life, NOT THE BAD STUFF.

So i bring to you the top five most depressing christmas songs i have ever heard. Why top five, because im not that creative for a top 10.

------------------------
5. Christmas at Ground Zero - "Weird Al" Yankovic
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGdrMOttV_s

Who in their right mind will listen to this song in today's world. Sure when i heard this when i was a wee lad, i found this to be a very funny song, but now that im older and fears the end of life as we know it though the means of nuclear weapons, i think this can be a humorous but honest look into the threat that will plague everyone. We have seen it in movies and everything else. My god, lets not think about what can happen with some crazy terrorist group and nukes aimed up our asses.

4. Ill be home for Christmas - Frank Sinatra
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v83gbfiKAms

I have nothing but respect for Sinatra, but seriously, a slow song like this is the last thing i want to hear at 11:30pm if im working. Sure its a classic, but its just so down. While doing research, i found this to be a downer just because of the tone and pace of the song. Then i read how the singer isnt actually going to be home for christmas. Ok, wayy to give false hopes to the person hes singing it to.

3. The little boy Santa forgot - Nat King Cole
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vk_JdojSlZc

As a kid who grew up believing in the concept of a jolly fat man who gives presents to those who have been good and those who have been bad, this offends me. Then again, i might have learned that Santa doesnt exist as i realized the friends of mine who might have been bad, still getting presents. But this is really depressing for another reason, the father is absent for what ever reason and there is no explanation. To me, this could mean that the kids father is A). in jail B). passed on or C). separated from the mother. Either way, this still gets on my list as depressing Christmas songs.

2. Blue Christmas - Elvis Presley
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUyuGFoiWJ0

Sounds like someone is alone on Christmas, and i can relate to this as i have not had a lot of Christmas's with a significant other. This is sad and depressing just because of how Presley sings it, but thats like a lot of his songs though during this era for his music. Still gets on the list as this can be both a break up song or just a slow song in general.

and time for number 1:

1. Christmas Shoes - Newsong
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNsvE33pRSw

Oh dear god, this song made me incredibly depressed. When i think of holiday songs, i think of "Santa Claus is coming to town" or "Rudolph the red nosed reindeer" or something upbeat, with hope, but this one, my lord. I heard this for the first time while at work, i hear the chorus in the background to my scanner gun beeping product to be put away, i hear "And I want her to look beautiful if Mama meets Jesus tonight". What the hell!? I dont want to think about my parents dying around christmas, its bad enough my mother had to go though with loosing her mother around new years, thats something i dont want to think about. Thanks a lot Newsong, you really know how to depress me around the holidays.

Some of the things i said in this entry might not make sense, but when it comes down to it, you should never have a depressing holiday song, you should stick to traditional or even joy filled. I guess any song can be depressing when you really analyze them, hell, i interpreted Frosty the snowman to be a song about demonic possession of an inanimate object (look up anything about the Warrens, and look up about the doll thats in their collection, same deal).

The moral of the story, just have christmas songs be happy, no need to be down, some of us already have enough problems with this stuff.

I hope everyone out there has a safe and merry Christmas, a happy Kwanzaa and a great Hanukkah. Me..ill be celibrating around a metal pole, eating comfort foods, telling everyone around me how they disappointed me over the course of the year then challenge the head of the household to a wrestling match that can only end when and if i can pin him.

Yes, happy Festivus everyone!
